5 Tips for Effective Webinars

Make your next webinar awesome

Webinars enable you to present online in front of a huge audience. No limitations, no travelling costs and an easy set-up make it possible to reach the world. These five tips will help you to successfully handle your next webinar.

1. Use more slides than in traditional presentations

Compared to traditional presentations, where the presenter speaks in front of the audience, there are several differences at your webinar. You cannot really use your body language, the only way you communicate with the audience over distance are your voice and your slide deck. Hence, we would recommend to include more slides. The information on each slide should be like in traditional presentations. Changing from slide to slide more often makes it easier for your audience to focus. In case that you stay more than five minutes on a single slide, half of your audience will do something else, e.g. looking on social media. Make your presentation effective and move from one interesting slide to the next one about every minute.

2. Interaction is very important

While traditional presentations should be at least somehow interactive, webinars must be very interactive. Interaction already starts prior to the presentation, where you should share and comment the presentation via social media. Create your own hashtag for the webinar and answer questions beforehand. Make sure that you do not fully reveal the content of your webinar so that the interested people still have a reason to listen. During your webinar, interaction is more challenging but also more important. Make sure that your listeners can easily ask written questions during the whole seminar. This has many advantages. First, it will be easier to encourage other listeners as well. Second, your audience can immediately let you know in case that there are technical issues or if something remains unclear. Finally, the interactions will give you instant feedback to better estimate if you should change your performance or continue like before. After your presentation, it is important to keep the interactions ongoing. Use your webinar as a starting point for a great discussion among you and your followers.

3. Speak clearly and friendly

Needless to say that your voice is very important too. Make sure to practice in advance with some friends or colleagues who give you honest feedback. How does your voice sound for somebody who is listening to your webinar? Should you talk a little bit slower or faster? Maybe you need to change the microphone. It is nearly impossible to react during the webinar if there are problems with the audio line. Therefore, it makes sense to fix such issues in advance.

4. Choose the right software

There are several webinar tools available. Depending on the format of your presentation and your budget, the one or the other could better fit your needs. WebEx and GoToWebinar are the established webinar tools with many features, but also with a relatively high starting price for smaller webinars. Adobe Connect and BrightTALK can be categorized as premium webinar tools, where high-quality services can be expected. Many newcomers such as Google Hangouts, Beamium or ClearSlide offer a great, specific feature set for a modern webinar experience. There is no best tool for webinars, you should try out different ones and choose the one which best fits your needs.

5. Capture leads and analyze the success of your webinar

Finally, the end of your webinar is not the end of your work. Why did you make the webinar? Probably to generate leads, get in touch with customers, follow-up and successfully convince the listeners from your business. Hence, it is very important to analyze the success of your webinar afterwards.
